After the war of 1870–71 his family moved to Bohain-en-Vermandois, France. He began painting during a convalescence from an operation, and in 1891 moved to Paris to study art. Matisse continued, with some long interruptions, to study in the atelier until 1899, when he was forced to leave by Fernand Cormon, an intolerant painter who had become the professor after Moreau’s death. Henry IV granted religious freedom to Protestants by issuing the Edict of Nantes during his reign as king of France, from 1589 to 1610. From this point onward he became increasingly confident and venturesome, both as an artist and as a man. He also worked extensively in printmaking during these years. Like much of Matisse’s mature work, this scene captured a mood rather than merely trying to depict the world realistically.
